1. September Eleven

My Twin Companions

We’ll never survive! Nonsense. You’re only saying that because no one ever has. ― William Goldman, The Princess Bride

* * * * *

On the night of September 10, 2001, I struggled to fall asleep. My right shoulder was throbbing from dislocation. I had spent the day riding on the back of a motorcycle with a guy I was dating.

I don’t like motorcycles, in fact they scare me, but I liked him so I gave it a try. We went on a ride for several hours through the country roads north of New York City. Holding on to him, my shoulder, which had been injured years before from a bike fall, slowly pulled out of joint. I couldn’t feel it until we ended the ride. Pressing down with my right arm to dismount from the bike, I felt sharp pain shoot down. It was a poor ending to an overall unenjoyable day.
